Weight Loss Program - How Much Weight Would You Like to Lose?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February, 2007 approved orlistat capsules (Alli 60 mg. capsule) as an over-the-counter (OTC) weight loss aid for overweight adults, kudos to Bush administration. Prior to this date, orlistat was marketed only as Xenical, the prescription form of the same drug, orlistat. The FDA did a fine job in making orlistat an OTC, ahead of the EU, for instance. Orlistat works by inhibiting the fat-busting enzyme called Lipase in the gut. The "unbusted" fats cannot be absorbed by the body and they find their way into the toilet. In doses of 120 mg. three times a day, 30% of eaten fats will go into the sewer. Less than 2% of the drug gets absorbed in the body so more than 98% of the drug passes in the stools, mostly unchanged. Still not happy?

One might ask what happens to the bad fats in the blood, e.g. bad cholesterol? One can expect lowering of bad cholesterol aka LDL, the lethal variety that makes widows. It does not affect the good cholesterol aka HDL by much but the HDL gets up by exercising, the pill is a good adjunct to 'other things' such as eating healthier foods, not drinking alcohol, exercising, not smoking etc. The pill is taken only with a fatty meal. In other words, if you are eating an apple for lunch, there is no need to waste a capsule there. Many feel that this is an "expensive" capsule. I agree. The sponsor is making a killing over some lousy fat fed to people by way of fast foods, another killing in the first degree. Frankly, a Big Mac should come with one free orlistat. In the global economy, one orlistat should cost no more than 12-15 cents, in my view and they still will make decent profits. I do not know when the patent is up for the generics to plunge in. Hopefully soon.

Administration

Administer during or up to 1 hour after each main meal containing fat.

Precautions:

Fat soluble vitamins also 'get lost' in the process. A multivitamin containing the fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) should be administered once daily at least 2 hours before or after Alli. Vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency is a common condition as it is (thanks to the deep freeze winters). Orlistat will make this worse. This is especially important in women and is totally preventable. Lack of Vitamin D also causes muscle incoordination besides thin bones thus increasing the chances of fall and fracture, not common knowledge.

Orlistat is a God sent pill for Type II diabetics, mostly obese. Therapy modification is recommended w a doctor.

Orlistat is not recommended for use during pregnancy/lactation and transplant patients.

Drug interactions

If you are taking blood thinners, transplant drugs, or some other prescription meds, you need to talk to your doctor for adjustment. Your pharmacist has a list of these for free.

Drink plenty of water when on orlistat to keep kidneys flushed well.

For obese kids over 12, consult with your doctor.

Orlistat thus appears to be a safe drug, no lawyer has collected anything on it that I am aware of. Now, that is something.

I've been practicing yoga off and on for over ten years and this is a very solid workout. The moves are to a level where anyone can do them or modify them if they find a move too difficult. Don't get me wrong, this is a challenging workout, but with time you will be amazed at your progress.

I've found that the new style of yoga dvd's have a jerky, rapid movement style that I find dangerous (certainly for people new to yoga), but this DVD used fluid movements.

I loved this DVD. The instructor, Ashley Turner has put a program together that is a challenging yoga practice while counseling the user to be more self aware of their choices. She has a pleasant voice that is very encouraging. I think that this DVD is more for an advanced beginner who has a little bit of yoga exposure. It certainly can be modified by users to be more difficult, for example; by jumping back to plank pose instead of stepping back. I am glad that I bought this DVD and will use it to supplement my practice when I'm not in the mood for my favorites: Bryan Kest, Baron Baptiste, or Sadie Nardini!

How To Calculate Weight Loss Percentage

Losing weight can sometimes be a very difficult task, requiring a large amount of energy and a lot of motivation. Knowing how to calculate weight loss percentage can really be a morale booster for your rough times because your actual results can only encourage you to perform more of the taken actions - like jogging, dieting or others.

It can also help you stay on track and not exaggerate with anything, as we do know that anything done in excess can harm your body. It can help you set goals and achieve them step by step.

But how do we calculate weight loss percentage? Is it a difficult math task? No way! It's a pretty basic formula. First of all you'll need to remember your initial weight.
Secondly, you'll need your actual weight at this point.
Now, the formula goes like this:

((IW-AW)/IW) * 100= weight loss percentage

In this formula IW is your initial weight and AW is your actual weight at this point.
It's not as complicated as it initially seems: practically all you do is subtract the actual weight from the initial weight and divide the number obtained by your initial weight. Multiply the result with 100 and you'll get the exact percent.

Public health messages sometimes tend to have the opposite effect of what they are intended to do. Constantly being bombarded by the same broken record can make us switch off. Unfortunately, it's very seldom that the dangers of these warnings disappear in a similar way. Take for example the dangers of being obese, or even overweight. We can ignore all the warnings we want, but the fact remains that if you are carrying excess weight, you will at some stage suffer from the associated health problems.

In a recent National Geographic magazine the statistically most likely causes of death in the United States were listed. The top three are heart disease (1 in 5 chance), cancer (1 in 7 chance) and stroke (1 in 24 chance). All three are closely associated with, if not directly linked to being overweight (incidentally, the cause of death with the least chance of occurring was by fireworks discharge with a 1 in 340,733 chance). It's no coincidence that the Americans also happen to be the fattest people walking the earth at the moment; closely followed we should add, by the Australians.

If you think that you aren't at risk, grab a tape measure and measure your waist. Men have an increased risk of developing obesity related diseases if the measurement is more than 94cm, and a substantially higher risk if their waist is more than 102cm. For women these figures are 80cm and 88cm respectively.

Fat surrounding the abdomen, cutely referred to as a 'pot belly', regardless of the rest of your size, increases the chance of developing health conditions like; heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain cancers. Many of you will probably be surprised to find you fit into this higher risk category. The large number of people in our community who are morbidly obese tend to give the rest of us a false sense of security.

The health risks and body fat distribution is as follows:

Least risk - slim people with no pot belly

Moderate risk - overweight people with no pot belly

Moderate risk - overweight people with no pot belly

Highest risk - overweight people with a pot belly

Your risk of developing diseases increases with your weight. The more overweight you are the higher your chance of developing; heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain types of cancer, gout (joint pain caused by excess uric acid) and gallbladder disease. Being overweight can also bring on the uncomfortable condition of sleep apnea and painful osteoarthritis.

Overweight people also are more likely to have high blood pressure, which is associated with a multitude of health problems. Excess kilos can also mean very high blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides (blood fats), which can also lead to heart disease.

Being obese or overweight will almost certainly shorten your life, and certainly lessen the quality of your life. The ironic thing is that heart disease, many cancers and stroke are largely preventable through correct diet and exercise. These inflictions are not something that is out of out of our power, a symptom of modern life that we have to learn to accept.

The good news is a loss of just five to 10 kilos can dramatically improve your health. It's also a good idea to have your GP check your blood pressure and cholesterol. Left unchecked these symptoms can do incredible damage to your body.

Simple changes to your diet and lifestyle will have dramatic and positive effects on your health.


Do some exercise regularly, start off with just three or four half hour walks per week. Build up your exercise to half an hour every day, plus add some stretching, deep breathing, resistance training (light weights for 10 minutes three times a week), and some stamina training to get your heart rate up (20 minutes, three times a week).
Get some good quality sleep every night (7-8 hours), and try to go to bed and get up around the same time every day, even on weekends.
Get yourself a hobby besides eating. Eat only when you're hungry instead!
Avoid saturated fats, trans fats and white bread, white rice and white pasta.
Eat food that is as close to its natural state as possible; lean meats, fruits, vegetables, wholegrain breads, cereals, pasta and brown rice.
Drink eight glasses of water a day.
Take a quality multivitamin.
